We are all familiar with the term Ayurveda. Every other advertisement today on the television is of a product which claims to be ayurvedic. What we don’t realize is that Ayurveda is a part of our daily life. A ginger tea for sore throat is also an ayurvedic healing potion. Our ancestors knew that salt and lime can help in preventing dental issues. But we went behind branded products available in the market, blindly believing the advertisements. And now the same products claim to have salt in it; what an irony!
It is therefore very important for us to know Ayurveda in detail; its methods and practices to identify what truly Ayurveda is and what it means to lead a life the ayurvedic way. Ayurveda is one of the oldest scientific medical systems in the world which includes not only treatment of disease but also prevention of disease and protection of health. Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and use of herbs.
Even though this ancient branch of medicine originated in India, the popularity of this as a method of treatment is comparatively much less. Ayurveda is accepted as a complimentary medicine by western countries and as an alternative medicine in our country. However, our knowledge and acceptability of Ayurveda amongst the general public for treating their lifestyle diseases and ailments are far limited. Knowledge of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create the balance of body, mind and consciousness according to one’s own individual constitution and how to make lifestyle changes to bring about and maintain this balance.
The journals and magazines available today exclusively on Ayurveda are far and few. Also, the available literatures are mostly in Sanskrit, which a common man can’t understand. Vedayu is an attempt to familiarize Ayurveda to all. Vedayu will try in its earnest to discuss the most common diseases, its prevention and treatment available in Ayurveda in the simplest of language understandable to a common man. In line with this thought, every issue of ‘Vedayu - Health with Ayurveda’ will focus on acquainting the readers with the basics of Ayurveda and how this ancient branch of medicine holds the key to resolve and relieve a majority of our modern day health problems.
